PART 1 — THE CORE IDEA MOST PEOPLE MISS

Before the sports make sense, you need two concepts.

1️⃣ Prey vs Civil (simple, no jargon)

PreyThe dog engages because:

  • Movement triggers chase

  • Equipment is visible (sleeve, suit)

  • The bite itself is the reward

Think:

“This is a game and I want to win it.”

Prey ≠ weak. But prey does not require the dog to believe the person is a threat.

CivilThe dog engages because:

  • The person is threatening

  • No visible equipment

  • Pressure is psychological and physical

  • Bite may not even be possible (muzzle)

Think:

“This human is dangerous and must be stopped.”

Civil requires:

  • Strong nerves

  • Confidence

  • Willingness to stay in conflict

2️⃣ Control vs Independence

  • High control → handler directs every move

  • High independence → dog solves problems alone

Every sport sits somewhere on this scale.

3️⃣ Physical vs Mental Endurance

  • Physical stamina: Running, climbing, swimming, long activity periods

  • Mental endurance: Focus under distraction, problem-solving, stress management

Sports differ in which type they test (see full table below).

4️⃣ The Decoy / Helper

  • IGP/AS: “Technical director” — moves predictably, highlights dog skills

  • PSA/KNPV/ZVV: “Adversary” — actively tries to make dog fail

Impact: The helper role defines civil vs prey stress, intensity, and realism

PART 2 — MUZZLE WORK (WHAT & WHY)

What is muzzle work? Dog wears a basket muzzle and must:

  • Engage

  • Fight

  • Push

  • Stay committed without biting.

Why it’s valuable

  • Removes prey reward

  • Tests true intent

  • Safer for helpers

  • Reveals nerve strength

Where it appears

  • Required: ZVV, KNPV

  • Sometimes: PSA

  • Never: IGP, AS, FH, HGH, SAR

PART 3 — SPORT-BY-SPORT BREAKDOWN

🟦 IGP (formerly IPO / Schutzhund)

What it is: Classic working GSD sport testing:

  • Footstep tracking

  • High-precision obedience

  • Patterned protection

Style:

  • Mostly prey

  • Handler control high

  • Predictable helper

IGP3

Environment:

  • Flat fields, minimal obstacles, no swimming

🟦 American Schutzhund (AS)

Reality correction: AS is “Old School / Harder” than modern IGP.

  • Longer bite duration

  • More environmental stress

  • Stronger, less predictable decoy

  • Tests “realistic” working dog skills

Style:

  • Prey-driven initially, but helper is adversary

  • Longer sequences stress dog’s endurance and mental focus

🟩 HGH (Herding Dog Test)

What HGH actually stands for:HGH = HerdengebrauchshundprüfungLiterally: “Herding utility dog test.”

This is traditional continental shepherding, not a sport course.

HGH vs AKC Herding (big difference)

AKC herding trials

  • Designed to be inclusive for many breeds

  • Structured courses

  • Frequent handler direction

  • Short work periods

  • Heavily influenced by Border Collie style

AKC herding is about:

  • Responsiveness

  • Precision commands

  • Course accuracy

👉 It’s a sport abstraction of herding.

HGH herding

  • Designed specifically for GSD-type tending dogs

  • Conducted on open range

  • Minimal handler input

  • Long-duration work (often hours, not minutes)

  • Practical flock protection

HGH is about:

  • Judgment

  • Endurance

  • Calm authority

  • No protection

  • No tracking

  • Tests genetic herding instinct

👉 It is real pastoral work, not a course.

🟥 KNPV (Dutch Police)

Reality correction:

  • Not mostly civil — high-power prey + high independence

  • PH1 is heavily prey-driven

PART 6 — TAKEAWAYS

Sport

Key Feature

IGP / AS

Precision obedience + bite, AS harder / “Old School”

HGH

Calm authority, real tending instinct

FH

Mental concentration & tracking

ZVV

Balanced working GSD test

KNPV

High-power prey + independence, real operational realism

PSA

Environmental stress / prey → civil progression

SAR

Independent scent work, extreme endurance

Ultimate “all-around GSD”: ZVV-style with SAR or HGH exposure & environmental stress training

✅ Key reminders:

  • Decoy role defines realism (technical director vs adversary)

  • Muzzle work separates prey from true civil courage

  • HGH preserves original German Shepherd purpose

  • Endurance split (physical/mental) is critical in judging real working ability
